To create AVR-created Impacta executables, you must have a licensed copy of Impacta on the system in which you are going to compile the AVR executables.
See Compile AVR Executables with Impacta for the information to create the AVR-created executables.
All AVR executables that you would like to examine using ASNA Impacta for AVR MUST be recompiled using a licensed version of Impacta and using AVR build 11.300 and higher. This must be done so that Impacta can generated and extract the necessary information so it can be viewed in Impacta.
When Impacta is installed and licensed, the Impacta tab from Projects - Project Settings will display a dialog for you to view or change the Impacta information to be embedded into the AVR executable. The default is to embed All Information into the executable, so you don't have to go into this option unless you want to verify or change the setting.
To View or Change the Impacta Information that gets Embedded into an Executable:
1. Select Project Settings from the Project menu.
2. Select the Impacta tab. The Impacta dialog will display.
3. Enter or select the following to the Impacta dialog.
None:
When this option is selected, no Impacta information will be added to the executable. With this option selected, you will not be able to view any of it's information, as it will not be loaded into the Impacta data files.
All Information:
This option is the default, and informs AVR to embed all Impacta information into the executable, so that it can be viewed with ASNA Impacta for AVR. This is the recommended setting. The information it will gather for the Executable's Project is all Data files, Controls, Objects/Classes and Remove Program Call information.
Selected Information:
When this option is selected, the Select Information options will become enabled. You can manually select or unselect which options you want embedded for this particular executable. The options available are to gather the Data files, Controls, Objects/Classes and Remove Program Call information for the Executable's Project.

Select this button to display the on-line help topic on the Impacta tab.
Please refer to the Impacta help for more information.
After Impacta has been installed, licensed, and AVR/Impacta executables have been generated in AVR, you are now ready to start and begin using Impacta.
To Start Impacta:
1. Start Impacta by selecting Start – Programs - ASNA Product Suite - ASNA Impacta - ASNA Impacta, or select the shortcut to Impacta which was placed onto your desktop when it was installed.
2. The main ASNA Impacta for AVR window will display.
3. The first thing you need to do to begin using Impacta is to gather a collection of data files containing all of the AVR EXE's, DLLS, and OCXes from each desired computer on your network. Your Impacta data files will contain the Impacta information for all of the executables that you include when performing a Gather.
4. However, once you have gathered data for Impacta, the default setting is to automatically open the data files for you the next time Impacta is opened. You can turn this option off by selecting Tools - Save Settings and select the Always Open Impacta Data Files on Startup option to remove the check mark.
5. Once you have gathered all data files, refer to the topics within the book Using Impacta for more information.
There are several online and interactive tutorials to assist you in getting started and using ASNA Impacta. The time in minutes and a description for each tutorial is displayed next to the topic. See Impacta Tutorials for a listing of the tutorials available.
Please refer to the Impacta help for more information.
To Gather and Load AVR Executables (by path):
1. Open the Impacta Gatherer by either selecting Gather by path from the Data menu, Ctrl+G, or Gather Impacta data (by path)... icon from the main Impacta Toolbar.
The Gather AVR Executable window will display.
2. The first time you get into this dialog, the Window will be completely empty. You first begin by entering a complete path in the Folder to Gather field, or by selecting the Browse button to search for a folder.
All subfolders within the starting path will be searched as well. For example, if you just enter or select C:\, all folders and subfolders contained on that drive will be searched. However, this may take some time, but you can select the Stop button to stop the search at any time.
3. Select the Add Folder button to add that folder to the listing of folders to gather.
4.
Continue to "add" folders that
you want to include in the gather, as stated in steps 2 and 3.
The listing of folders to gather will
display in the order in which they were selected. They will appear checked, and the status bar
will state the number checked out of the total number.
Select the right-mouse button to see the menu options you have access to.
Clear folder list
Delete
Messages
Select All
Statistics
UnSelect All
5. When all of the paths and computers to begin searching are set, you can "Save" that listing of folders, so that next time you want to do a gather, you don't have to manually input all of the folders again, you just do a File - Open and select the Gather Control File (.gcf file) to open. However, you can always "add" to the list, "Delete" from the list, or create as many "Saved" lists as you need. For example, you could have a Gather file called "Daily", or "Weekly", or "Monthly", or by computer name, path, etc.
6. To start the gather process, select the Interactive Gatherer menu option from the Run menu, select the Ctrl+R keys, or select the Gather by Path icon on the toolbar.
As each folder is searched, the folder will be bolded, and the check mark will be removed. A progress bar will display at the bottom as files are being searched in a folder. If a wrong path was specified, or it is taking too long, you can select the Stop button. Executables are loaded at the time that they are gathered, so some files may already be loaded. However, to continue the gather, just select the Run button again, and the Gather will continue where it left off.
7. When the gathering process is complete, the number of AVR executables that were found and loaded will be displayed in the status bar of the dialog. That number of executables is now contained in the Impacta data files.
In fact, for each folder, you can view lots of Statistics, such as any warnings, the date and time of the gather, how long the gather process took for that folder, the number of items searched, and the number of AVR executables loaded.
8. Select Exit from the File menu, or Ctrl+X to close this window and return to the Main Impacta window.
You are now ready to begin using Impacta!. Continue with the information contained in the Using Impacta book for the information is using and getting around in Impacta.
Please refer to the Impacta help for more information.
Impacta contains several tutorials you can view and interact with to assist you in learning Impacta. Please read and follow the tips below to ensure the best results when viewing a tutorial.
For Best Results when Viewing a Tutorial:
· The size of the actual tutorial content is 834 x 585, due to the size of the Impacta window. In order to view the entire content and its window, ensure that your screen resolution is set to at least 1024 x 768.
· When you select a tutorial to view, it will open in a separate window. However, you may need to maximize or resize this window in order to view all its contents. In the first couple screens, there will be a red background, or border that shows the exact size of the demonstration window. The tutorial will not continue until you press the Next button, so take the time to maximize the window so the red borders are in view. The new window size will be remembered, so the next time you open that tutorial, it will already be maximized.
· A playback control will display at the bottom of each screen. Use the playback controls to go back or forward a screen, pause, play (which is the same as pressing the Next button), go to the end or beginning, or to exit the tutorial. There is also a slider bar on that control that gives a general idea of where you are in the tutorial, or how much is left.
· There is no audio in these tutorials, so there is no need for speakers, or speaker adjustments.
To View a Tutorial:
1. Ensure screen resolution is set to at least 1024 x 768.
2. You can select the Tutorials page in the Impacta help Contents tab, select the index and enter Tutorials, or select the Help - Tutorial menu option or icon from Impacta.
3. Select the link containing the tutorial to view.
4. Maximize the window (if needed) to see all of the tutorial window.
5. The tutorials require user interaction to select an option or the Next button to continue.
6. Use the Playback controls as needed to go forward, backward, to the beginning or end, or to Exit.
