PROBLEM Receiving "Error 655: Not authorized to read object in library" when using Acceler8DB Database Manager

The information in this article applies to:

    • Acceler8DB, Release 5.0 and Higher
    • DataGate/400, Release 5.0 and Higher
    • Windows

SYMPTOMS:

When attempting to open the database on the AS/400, you are getting an error that you are not authorized to read object in library.

Here is the error message:

Error 655: Not authorized to read object in library.

CAUSE:

Not enough permissions are allowed on the AS/400 user profile.

RESOLUTION:

Allow the user to have limit capabilities set to *NO.  This setting does not cause any issues with applications if set to *YES.

MORE INFORMATION:

Customers upgrading to DataGate/400 5.0 will receive the error message "Error: 655 Not authorized to read object in library" when they try to connect using Database Manager or products that return the list of libraries. This error will occur when the User Profile that is being used to connect has the Limit Capabilities option set to *YES (See Figure 1 below). This change was made to DataGate/400 5.0. When this option is set to *NO, the user is prevented from running command line commands such as DSPLIB *ALL. The Database Manager will makes a call to an API that will ultimately try to enumerate the libraries. But if you log onto the AS/400 with the user and try and do the DSPLIB *ALL, you will receive an error message.

Figure 1

In prior releases (DataGate/400 4.7 and lower), Acceler8DB would ignore that option at the user profile level and just allow the libraries to be returned.

So even if they can't connect to the AS/400 using Database Manager, if they have authority to work with specific files, the AVR program will be unaffected.
